If you know Grodziskies (Gratzers), then you’re prepared for this beer. The wheat composition and light power of alcohol compels you to rock back, slouch, and soak in the setting sun. After working all day in my yard, it’s easy to bask in the libations liberation. This beer looks like a wheat beer, a light wheat beer (if there is such a thing), especially for anything SmokeBeerMinistry reviews, and this beer tastes like a medium Bamberg smoked wheat, AND that is just about exactly what a Gratzer is supposed to be. A brewer once pointed out to me that if a brewer makes a beer plain enough, they would probably offend the least number of people (and sell that beer), and that’s why nobody can tell the difference between vast numbers of American lagers. Gratzers are the lagers of the smokebeer world… great if you want to drink 11 of them, and with Smoke Wheat Everyday, I certainly could. This beer is just a bit tart, little sour, modestly wheaty, modestly smoky, and pontifically liberating. If only SBM could decree that all lagers (and pilsners for that matter) be replaced with Grodiskies. Final overall happiness metric: 5.7 out of 7 smokestacks.

Brewer’s Description | (Ripped from Chicago Reader article) …Brewer Alex Robertson says, they use 100 percent smoked wheat malt and Saaz hops. They then combine three parts of the Grätzer with two parts of their Berliner Weisse (a sour beer style that also dates back several hundred years), which is brewed with a sour culture that Robertson developed himself. “When we tried the straight smoked beer we thought it was good, but the sour really brightened it up,” Roberson says. “It has a smoky quality kind of like bacon, then a sour-apple background note.” |
