Gone are the days of reserving bottles for the good beer. Brewers are perfectly happy with putting good beer in cans. And I guess they kinda have to be cause everybody’s out of glass right now (Its a mess out there). And the folks of Melvin Brewing felt fine enough to put this dark and hardy beer, Velvet Rut, into a can, which I like, and who cares anyway if you’re pouring it into a chalice (maybe that’s just me)? This beer reminds me of Spanning and Sensate, and actually, it reminds me of all of the DeMolen beers, feel free to research. Brewed in Wyoming, I bet this Imperial Smoked Porter has some of those Idaho hops in there because I’m gettin some bitterness and dryness in these sips. And as the setting sun begins to peek through the trees and highlight Marie Laveau in the background, I feel compelled to wrap this review up. Overall score is 5.5 out of a total 7 points possible.

Beer Name | Melvin Velvet Rut |
Brewer’s Description | Winter in the mountains can be brutal, and sometimes you just need to find a cozy place to hunker down with a robust dark ale to warm your insides. Our Alpine crew knows this feeling well, and it was the inspiration behind our newest experiMENTAL Series release. This bold smoked imperial porter is pitch black in color with a beautiful tan head. The aroma kicks things off with notes of campfire, coffee and chocolate, and then your palate is rewarded with more of the same rich, roasty flavors along with a touch of dried stone fruit. Put on your preferred lounging gear, crack a cold can, and get into your own velvet rut. |
