What’s not to like about Voodoo Brewery? These are the people who brought you Man Bear Pig, a highly sought after rare beer that I’ll almost certainly never have. And these might be the people who drove the secondary price over $400 a bottle, but who cares? It’s not like they’re bringing in Exxon money or anything. First off, roasted is not the same as smoked, and this beer is made with roasted malts, as far as we know. But slight smoke properties do swirl around in this beer. And the name, well, how could it not find its way into the SmokeBeerMinistry tabernacle? My fascination with Voodoo came from annual family summer vacations. With family in and around NOLA, how could my dad resist piling us all up into his station wagon and forcing us to sleep on some random relatives living room floor for a week or two? It was worth it to me if it meant even just one day strolling around the French Quarter. I might make the trip to Pennsylvania to ask Voodoo Brewery what drove their agenda… and demand some Man Bear Pig beer. Big Black Voodoo Daddy does share some flavors with a good number of other imperial stouts, and added about twice the alcohol. The 12% abv is a surprise both when you read it on the label and when you get up after having had one, but its not so noticeable on the palate. The chocolate malts are touted by Voodoo, but really didn’t drive the taste for me, and that’s to its benefit. Nice thick viscous snifter beer for the end of the night, or for after you’ve polished off an entire bottle of wine. I’ll be sure to follow Voodoo for upcoming happenings in the near future, but for now, I’ll stay put on the living room floor and hope I at least make it to the couch before my wife comes down for work tomorrow morning. Final smokestack rating = 5.75 smokestacks.
