Not to be confused with the Smoked Rye Lager that The Blind Pig made about 6 months ago, this beer, Smoked Lager, came out just behind the rye in it’s overall score. With a 3.9 smokestack rating (out of 7) The Blind Pig’s Smoked Lager inclines SmokeBeerMinistry to move on and find a different smokebeer before coming back around to this one. A ‘meh’ score of just a mere 4 smokestacks is enough to keep SBM in the mix for further drunkenings, but anything below that, as seen here, leads us to do our drunkening with different libations, until the point of drunkenness, and then, well, who really can be held responsible for our behavior after that? Not us. From the looks of it, this beer is off to a good start, with proper lager hues and clarity. Smoke Lager smells of the right kind of smoke, with beechwood smoked malts stirring up memories of campfires, tent camping, brisk nights, and beef jerky. But, then the taste with a dry and bitterness to it raised questions about the type and timing of the hops during production. One individual present at the official tasting, whom was unaware of the entire world of smoked beers prior to this day, tasted this beer, and immediately got up and bought one of her own. This is unusual. Typically, first timers are force fed smokebeer after smokebeer until their taste buds are so shot that they think they like smokebeer. And those people rarely return. But on this day, a new convert is introduced to the smoke world with great aplomb. In conclusion, there were mixed signals from the table. The higher ranking officials pushed the score down just below the over under. Final overall rating = 3.9 smokestacks, meh.
