Fyne Ales Scotland – Fynebank Peat Smoked Golden Ale – 2.5 out of 7

My goal is to drink beers that score a 7 out of 7 smokestack rating; Fynebank falls short. This beer looks and smells like a good fest beer with a touch of peaty smoke on the back end encouraging me to take big chugs, but then the taste kind of let me down (not to mention the price). I paid $5.99 for one 11.2 oz bottle at a trustworthy grocery store, so I was already conditioned to expect more than what Fyne had to offer. Its a complex taste that indicates someone put a good deal of time crafting this brew, but the smoke is so far out there I don’t know if I’ll find any more of it after a mere 1/3 of the way through. The peat flavor is muddling it up a bit by being ill fitting with the other flavors; it is faint but its just enough to throw it off. The smoke is faint enough to be completely neglected in my opinion (under informed palates might miss it all together). I recommend changing the formula around or simply taking the word “smoked” off the label. Its too bad this beer isn’t bringing me any added pleasure because it has enough components to make a great beer, but something went haywire in the chemistry. Better luck next time Fyne. Overall Happiness factor = 2.5 smokestacks out of 7.
