Sprecher Brewing – Acapulco Golden Ale – 3 smokestacks out of 7

Idunno, maybe I liked this one more than I thought that I did. Although the final score of 3 seemed like I was entirely too generous when reviewing what I jotted down after the fact, I’m not going to step in later on down the road and beat these folks down any more just because I feel differently now. Oh no, I have to stick to my guns. I said 3, and 3 it is. Sprecher is a fairly well respected Wisconsin brewery that seems to cater to mother in laws more so than beer nerds, which is fine. At least I know what I’m going to get, a standardized, non-offensive, run of the mill beer selection. And the cokes they make are great. Grape, Orange, Red sodas, a regular ole’ Root Beer, and other flavors seem to crop up at all the cool sandwich shops and lunch counters around WI. I like to get them. And I like easy drinking beers for the beach, especially when I’m on the beach. Acapulco Golden Ale fits that genre. And this beer was beyond highly touted by several employees of the Sprecher pub and restaurant establishment where I got this beer, which actually made me think that they must want to get this keg emptied as fast as they can. But the smoked hops acted as the closer to get this one in the tabernacle. Described by the waiter as “like a Bud Light Lime” I honestly thought it tasted more like a Zima Gold, if that was the tequila flavored swill from the 90’s that I drank when I was discovering alcohol (and shoulder tapping), although there was plenty of lime flavor in this beer. Well anyway, I gotta wrap this up, I got a meeting to go to. A hint of smoked anything is an overstatement. A 3 out of 7 smokestacks is a plenty good score for a beer that isn’t even offered or listed on their website anymore. And I wonder why Sprecher’s restaurants aren’t doing any better? I want to applaud this company but they seem to forever dwell on the fringe of mediocrity. And one more thing, you gotta see this Zima Gold commercial at the bottom of this page. Yikes!
