Alstadberger is really good. Klostergarden is a great example of an organization that focused so closely on honing their craft of this beer, that they were able to refine this into a world leading example of smokebeer. Some brewers simply throw mud at a wall hoping something will stick, this crew started with a block of marble and delivered The Pietà. This beer rivals that of Schlenkerla’s products, who’ve had an over 300 year head start. This smoked ale smells and tastes like Aecht Schlenkerla’s Marzen beer, but a little less bitter. The smoke in this one is intense, campfire. I bet it’ll seep out of my skin. Despite the picture, it’s not so dark. It’s a ruby more than a black, maybe a deep copper. Oh, and by the way, this beer was a gusher. Right after opening it up, out rose a foam snake that made a bit of a short lived mess, fortunately I was near the sink. It calmed down and left behind one of the best beers I’ve had in all of 2017 (although I realize this review won’t get posted until 2018). And the smokepower is sustained all the way down to the bottom of the glass. I’m impressed. I look forward to drinking this beer again and again. Overall score = 6.75 smokestacks (out of 7).
