To Øl – Smoke on the Porter, Fire in the Rye – 6 out of 7

20170405_202859

I poured the whole thing down in there, all 0.375 liters. To Øl’s Smoke on the Porter, Fire in the Rye smelled malty-smoky, almost peaty, with a touch of chili in the nose. I took a sip and the first thing I noticed was the sweetness, a nice sweetness, a sweet porter daring me to tip it back and give it a big ole swaller. Then there was a little tingle on the back of my throat that slowly heated up into a definitive chili sensation, which made for one of the more interesting beers I’ve had. Rich porter and rye sugars swirling around in this spicy malty beer. There is a touch of ash and dryness to it on the exhale. I really wish this beer were twice the size. Bigger beer is better most of the time. There’s not so much lacing with the head after each sip, but there is a clean caramel colored beer film that covers the side of the glass and slides down onto the edge of the foam, rolling over and over it, elements of a lava lamp effect, which is way too captivating, looks neat… maybe this is just the right size given the 13.4% abv. Maybe there’s something to these spicy beers. Overall smokestack rating = 6 smokestacks.
