Marz Community Brewing Co. – marzcal kolsch – 3.8 smokestacks out of 7

Gusher! This beer was a gusher. It foamed up and out of the bottle as soon as I opened it, and all over my wife’s library books, actually, I guess they are everybody’s library books. So that sucked. After half a box of Kleenex (hey, it was an emergency, I used what was nearby), I was able to pour it into a glass without too much more fuss, although, as you can see, there was quite the foamy head to contend with. Marzcal smelled fine to me, like a good beer; like a Marz beer, and not like mezcal, tequila, or smoke. Mezcal is a smoky tequila, and some still come with a worm in the bottle, which is what gave Marz the inspiration for this particular formula, the tequila, not the worm. Marzcal smelled like a Marz wheat beer almost, and looked like one too. Once I got the foam down to a manageable level, I took a big ole swaller, and I surprisingly found smoke, good smoke, and a ton of it. Sip after sip, however, it dissipated, down to nothing but a little acidic and bitter tingle on the tongue. The was a hint of lime in this beer, way in the back, and no trace of mezcal, which was fine. All in all, it was okay. The score comes out just a worm below average at 3.8 smokestacks.
