I like this one better! (better than the Black Force One regular beer which I just reviewed, scroll down for that). That’s one difference I pulled out… the barreled beer is better. Another difference is the viscosity. It poured like syrup. Now, I’m no chemist with all the proper tools and gizmos, no, I just use the light on my phone, I hit it from the side. My light only penetrated at most one centimeter into the glass with the phone pressed up to the edge of the glass. This beer smells pretty much like the regular Black Force One with peaty note a bit more subdued (which is an improvement). Although peat flavors can be and have been done right, I’d rather avoid them altogether, like goat cheese… I’ve been conned too many times. Bourbon Barrel Edition is coming off sweeter, less bitter, both for the better. It seems like this one has more booze in it, but the labels read the same 10.4%. Maybe because I’ve had two the abv is catching up. In this beer, in this case, barrel aging makes it better. Overall happiness metric = 5.9 smokestacks, out of 7.

When we’d done that we thought “What if we took it further?” So we decided to go for it and create an Imperial Stout made with 5 different kinds of malt including substantial amounts of peat smoked malt, roasted barley and 3 different hop varieties. We then added a 4th variety for dry hopping. Finally it was bottled unfiltered, bottle conditioned and left to mature in the bottle for 2 months before release.
