Samuel Adams – Smokehouse Rauchbier (Longshot Series) – 4.5 out of 7

image

Who is this pretty boy on the label? His name is Samuel Adams Longshot, and he is the one responsible for the idea of a contest where people send in their homemade beer in search of something Boston Beer Company can sell, at least that’s what I gathered from the label. Samuel Longshot produced a very good beer… but not a very good smokebeer. The last beer SBM reviewed went much the same way, where it seemed the brewer went out of their way to use high quality (and expensive) ingredients, and then held back those ingredients from doing what they were designed to do. I presume the marketing team had a say in the matter, along with the warehouse, and I understand, a company can’t keep the show going if they can’t move the product. Sip after sip (and a few chugs) and I swear this is getting smokier and smokier. But it never reached out of the glass and punched me in the nose. It tastes like Bamberg Beechwood smoked malts were used. It tastes like a good beer. It’s a good sipping beer, but not much of a savoring beer. I still just may buy a sixer of this when I get a chance. Overall Happiness Factor – 4.5 out of 7.
